A Boggart is a monstrous British boogeyman.

The boggart is a malicious ogre and household spirit. It sometimes puts a cold hand on people’s faces at night. You must not name it, or it will become unreasonable and uncontrollable and follows your family wherever you go. A horseshoe over the doorway will protect you from boggarts. Boggarts are male and female. There are two types of boggarts. The household version is a goblin-like dwarf known to harm animals to make them go lame, steal items and turn milk sour. It's a manageable pest, but not dangerous. The second, more popular boggart that lives in marshes and swamps is way larger and is best-known for causing far more serious and dangerous harm i.e. mass destruction, kidnapping children and small and large calamities.
